Biohub launches a $1.8B Virtual Biology Initiative with the U.S. government, Google DeepMind and partners to build open AI biology data

What changed
Biohub announced the Virtual Biology Initiative on October 7, a roughly $1.8 billion effort combining large-scale biological measurement with AI modeling to create datasets and predictive models of cellular behavior. Reuters reports that the U.S. Department of Energy will contribute more than $500 million for measurements and computing, the NIH will help standardize existing data, and private partners including Meta, Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs are investing about $300 million collectively. The project aims to collect data from billions of cells over five years; some partners receive temporary early access before datasets are made public. This is a research-infrastructure initiative, not evidence that future drug-development gains have already been achieved.
