Anthropic announces Cowork cloud migration: new Pro and Max tasks move to the cloud from October 6 and 'Only on your computer' is removed

What changed

Anthropic's help center states that starting October 6, new Cowork tasks for Pro and Max users run in Anthropic's cloud and the 'Only on your computer' option is removed from Settings > General. Tasks already started locally stay on the computer. Cloud tasks can continue while a device is offline and the same session can be accessed across desktop, web and mobile. Local folders remain on the user's machine; a cloud task can fetch a needed local file only through the desktop app while it is open and from folders the user connected. Anthropic points users who need fully local execution to Claude Code on desktop.
