Mistral previews Large 4 “Le Chonk,” with open weights planned for October 27 after a restricted cyber-testing period

Mistral announced Mistral Large 4, internally nicknamed “Le Chonk,” on October 6. Reuters reports that the model is in preview, with selected cybersecurity experts and state authorities receiving early access to a version with fewer safety barriers for testing. Mistral plans a full public open-weight release on October 27. The company says Large 4 closes the gap with frontier models across coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing and product design. CEO Arthur Mensch also claimed advantages over some Chinese open-weight models in cybersecurity without naming models or benchmarks, so that claim should be treated as vendor positioning rather than an independently verified ranking.
